Hans Verhagen studied chemistry in Nijmegen and Paris, completing a PhD in food toxicology at the University of Maastricht in 1989. He worked for TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute and Unilever before joining the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in 2005 as Head of the Centre for Nutrition and Health. He served at the European Food Safety Authority from 2015 to 2020. A board-certified toxicologist and nutritionist, he has been a visiting professor at the University of Ulster since 2009 and at the Technical University of Denmark since 2021, while consulting through his own company since 2020.
